| The
Dominican Republic is an enchanting Caribbean jewel that combines the
breathtaking natural beauty of its diverse landscape with history, culture
and year-round sunshine.
Discovered by Christopher
Columbus in 1492 it was the first New World colony to be settled by the
Spanish. Originally inhabited by the Taino people, the country’s
gold deposits and fertile land made it a very attractive territory for
colonisation. The country was ceded to the French but independence was
finally granted in 1844. The country’s wealth was primarily from
cane sugar and the large plantations are still there with their grand
houses. Evidence of this rich and colourful past is reflected in its picturesque
towns with their cobbled plazas and gracious 16th century Spanish colonial
buildings that lend an historic charm to today’s cosmopolitan lifestyle.
Situated in the heart of
the Caribbean the Dominican Republic has 300 kilometres of the most beautiful,
shimmering palm-fringed beaches which range in colour from golden to sugar
white.
The Dominican Republic has
a vibrant and colourful culture; its spirit and charm is captured in its
Latin inspired Caribbean music, the national pastime of dancing the merengue
and mouth-watering food. The laidback Caribbean lifestyle mingles with
a Hispanic passion for partying - the warmth of the climate is matched
only by that of the people themselves.
The Dominican Republic occupies
the Eastern two-thirds of the island Hispaniola and is situated between
the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, bordering east Haiti.
The capital Santo Domingo is the New World's oldest capital and contains
many colonial buildings which have been carefully restored to retain their
original charm. There are many fine examples of 16th century Spanish architecture
and many fascinating structures that have survived for over 500 years
Situated just East of the Gregorio Luperón International Airport,
Puerto Plata, the Two Rivers Resort nestles beside a stunning beach on
the Islands` Amber Coast. The North coast is a beautifully scenic area
with picturesque beaches with a breathtaking mountain backdrop.
